Custom Order Ask the ArtisanImagine hand cutting and placing thousands of tiny sticks of varying diameters on end to form rivulets and and pathways. Countless hours of work went into this incredibly detailed table by Ryan Cole of Old Roots Furniture. A pathologist by day and wood worker by night, Ryan is clearly interested in things on a cellular level. From a zoomed-in look at this impeccably finished surface of the tabletop to its overall organic curvilinear outlines, one can truly feel the circle of life in flow.
Ryan is a wood, metal, and multi-media artist that resides on a farm outside of Boise, Idaho. His studio, Old Roots, is an earth-friendly, history-honoring collaboration with his best friend and fellow artist, Timothy Wonacott. They transcend their daily life stresses by pursuing their shared, intense, brotherly passion of reclaiming and resurrecting local historical backyard and farm trees, and old barns with stories. All of Ryan’s pieces are taken from standing tree or barn, saw milled, dried, transformed, and caressed into functional art by the artist from tree to table.
Trees and old barns, otherwise doomed to a fate of landfill refuse, firewood or chip, are caringly transformed into heirloom art that allows the old growth rings to re-sing the birdsong that graced their branches, relive the flowers bloomed, the fruit born, the storms weathered, and the shade shared.
